Friday my college roomates (not freinds) Andrew and Marshall came up to the Wilkes county for the weekend. I was pretty excited because Marshall had finally made use of himself and aranged us a tee time at Oakwoods Country Club, a private club here in WIlkes that Iv never played before, for free by pulling some strings at the course he works on in Pinehurst (I knew I kept him around for something). After a late night in Boone, which included driving on App States football field by "accident", we got up at 8 to head to the CC for our tee time. When we arrived we were greated and asked if we were here for a 10 AM tee time. Marshall replied yes and they said it would be 30 bucks a peice. Marshall said is that for Conrad (his last name) and the attendant said "oh oh no your good to go your cart is waitng out the door". I stood up a little straighter and strutted out.
The course itself was very challenging, which all of them are for me, but in very good shape for wilkes county. Lots of bunker and tough water hazards lined the course and made for alot of lost balls. Id have to say the holes that impressed me the most were 1 and 12. These were two tough par 3's that had water in all the right places to make it very challenging but exciting and scenic as well. The back nine overall was better than the front in scenery and layout. The par 4 tenth's fairway was split by a creek which made it tough but very cool to try and play. Overall a great course Id love to go back to any time I get a chance.
I did take my camera to get some pics for you guys but when i turned it on the battery light flashed and it shut off. My bad. By the end of the round the consensus between the three of us was that we had a good time because we all three were on the same level of suckyness. Which is a complement for Andrew because a few months ago he was below sucky and on the level of "just put the clubs down and go home". I could tell he had been putting in alot of time which I wish I could say for myself.
As soon as we finished our round we grabed a bite to eat and grabed the bikes to hit the trail. We decided it was to hot to do to much but we decided to session some of the downhill sections of the trail to try out Marshalls new dual slolem machine the Eastern Thunderbird. We hiked to the top and I followed Andrew down to try and teach him while Marshall tore it up. On the second run Andrew pushed it a little and hit a jump however all his weight came down on the front wheel as he straddled the top tube. He was riding marshals trek and did well but decided that was enough for one day. Me and marshal made another trip to the top and I took a turn on the eastern and it was a nice change to my rigid specialized with its fox f100 fork. Very fun and fast ride that loves to fly through the air.
As we got back to the truck Andrew said that he thought marshals wheel was bent a little. So we grabed the bike and started to spin the wheel and noticed a slight 6-10 inch side to side wobble in the wheel. Its safe to say it was destroyed. However I was the only one who could really laugh because it was marshals bike and andrew was going to have to pay for it... hilarious though.
Great weekend and Im looking forward to doing the same thing for the next 10 months back at school.
