As you read my intended schedule for next year you may have thought to yourself, “Wow, half his races next season are on the road.” Then a series of questions may have entered your head such as “Is he going soft on us, I thought this was a mountain bike blog”, Is he going to start shaving his legs, because if so Im out”, or maybe the most important question “How is he going to race half his races on the road next season with no road bike”.
Well Im out this week to put your concerns to rest.
First ill answer number one by saying “Road bikers who don’t ride mountain have no fun, but mountain bikers who don’t ride road have no legs”. I’m all about being faster next year so I can set my goals a bit higher than just not finishing last.
The second one is easily answered with maybe so mabe not. Just to ease my readers mind though I have about a 2 week beard going on so rest easy. Pics available upon request.
Now on to your final concerns about having no road bike. Well I noticed the same thing just as I was writing last week so this week I went out and bought a bike. All I can say is Iv got this stuff under control son.
Seriously though Iv been looking for a road bike for about three months. The problem is Im an extremely broke college kid so I wanted to get the best possible bike for the least amount of money (I guess everyone does though, right?) Iv bid on a number of specialized allez bikes on ebay and made offers on craigslist to no avail. Tuesday of this week however I spotted a Cannondale CAAD 8 on craigslist and made an offer $100 less than they wanted and they took it. I only had to drive a total of 6 hours yesterday to get it. About 2 hours in however the guy called and said the front shifter was not shifting properly and so he would take another 100 off the price and I said make it 200 in case I have to replace it and he agreed. Honestly I almost felt bad at how cheap I bought this bike for taking into consideration the guy included 2 pairs of gloves, shimano pedals and shoes, helmet, saddlebag with tool, co2, levers, and tube, a cateye commuter light, $200 cateye computer with cadence and speed ometer, and finally a $150 rack for the back of a pickup to haul it with. I wont say what I paid for the lot of it because im afraid you all will think less of me.
The bike is a Cannondale Caad 8 as I said with full Shimano 105 and ultegra rear derailleur, carbon slice fork, truative elita 2.2 crank, and so on. I love the looks of this bike and just feel a sense of pride sitting on a handmade in America frame. Im glad I waited and got this bike, I think it’s a better frame than a specialized allez. Rough weighing puts it in the 18-19 pound range which is lighter than I expected but Ill try to have a more official weight next week.
