So last week literally ten minutes after I posted my blog I received the phone call I had been dreading. The mechanic from my lbs called me up and said “Brandon, Iv got some good news and some bad news.” I replied ok lets here it. “He said, I started putting that shifter back together and it wasn’t going as well as Id hoped so I called Shimano to get an exploded view of the shifter to see if I could figure it out any better.” “When I told the technician what I was looking for he said, don’t tell me they brought that shifter in a plastic bag and I said yeah they did.” “He then told me the first thing I needed to do was take the shifter off the bike walk over to the garbage and throw it away.”
By this time im thinking well yeah that’s real bad news, guess I didn’t steal the bike off the guy like id hoped.
He went on to say that the guy said it could be put back together by some people but it would never work right again so he could order me a new shifter for $140.
More bad news.
I said “well alright roy” and then paused waiting for the good news. But that was it, that’s all he had to tell me. So I don’t know if the good news was he could order me a knew one or what but I only got bad from the call.
I went on to tell him to just hold off on the order and let me look around. So I went on a quest to find some Ultegra 9 speed shifters. At least if I was upgrading I would feel a bit better about spending the money. I ended up buying a set of Ultegra 6510 shifters. Supposedly these were the last model of 9 Speed ultegra shifters made and therefore the best. I got the set of them for 10 bucks more than I could get just one 105 shifter for new. This made the hit a lot easier to take in my mind.
I got the call earlier today that the new (to me) ultegra shifters were installed and working and I could pick the bike up Saturday when I go home.
So a bit of Campbell club Cycling news. We started back riding this week in preparation for road season after taking the last three weeks of October “off”. We have acquired three new members this year so far all of whom ride road. So I’m hoping that 1. All three of them are faster than I am and 2. We can have a decent showing in the ACCC road season. Honestly though Im excited that we have received some more interest from younger riders here at Campbell so maybe this club can last even after Marshall and I have left.
One more bit of club news, we are about to order tshirts. They will have all the current members names on the back as well as our sponsors. On the front it will have Campbell Cycling in block letters with a generic “bike route bike”. The shirts will be black with all orange lettering. If your interested just leave a comment before Monday next week with your size and you can pay me through paypal. The shirts will be 10 bucks a piece. You know you need another cycling t shirt c’mon.
Next week I hope to have a lot more info on our race and my first real ride report on the CAAD.
