I actually got out for a little over a 30 mile ride today for the first time here at the house in Wilkes. I had originally planned to go for a bit over 40 even though I got a bit of a late start with only a little 2 hours until it is really to dark to be riding on the road. Back at school I can usually ride and average close to 20mph but needless to say the story is a little different here in wilkes. Wilkes area riding is all about rolling hills, no major climbs for the most part just a lot of up and down. On the mountain bike trails this is true, as oppose to say some where like pisgah with long climbs and long downhills. Sure you can find some longer climbs but I find its a never ending battle of hill after hill. Today I rode from the house up yellow banks road, down Traphill road to Stone Mountain State Park. This was a really good route with smooth pavement and only one dog. Ill be honest this is more of a concern to me than the cars flying by. Im slowly getting use to the cars flying by but iv noticed its alot better with a larger group riding together rather than riding alone. The bike still feels stable and fast. I will say that is one thing I like about riding here at home as oppose to school. Here although you do have hills to climb you also have hills to descend, at school there is nothing but long flat straight roads. I ended up really pushing it to get back home before dark today with my legs aching. Honestly my legs have not really hurt like they have these first few road rides since I started riding my mountain bike for the first time. Just goes to show it really is a whole new ball game that I hope is really going to pay off when I do get back on the trails.
As I rode today and really felt the pain of climbing the hills around here I started to really think about my plans to ride Blood, Sweat and Gears. Im thinking that may have been a bit to large of goal for my first year on a road bike. Climbing had always been my strength in mountain races so I assumed I would have a bit more fitness on the road than what Iv showed so far. We'll see how things go over the winter and through road season.
We did order our Shirts for the Cycling Team this week so if you want one we did get a few extras.
Kinda short this evnin I know but i should have some new cycling gear coming in next week so look forward to that and more ride reports. Hopefully next time Ill try to bring a camera to spice things up a bit here on the blog.
merry thanksgiving to all...
