So the past week has consisted of recovering from the tour de cure and transitioning from base 2 to base 3. Also my mom had to undergo some pretty serious surgery which involved several nights spent on the waiting room couch. Shes home now and doing well though so back to more pleasant things.
So time has been spent around the house with some short road rides mixed in when I could but ride time has been short while trying to take care of mom post surgery.
While hanging around the house trying to take care of the mother I did manage to finally give some attention to my mountain bike. The rear derailleur cable has been sitting in the parts box and needed to be changed. Iv been putting this off for months trying to convince myself that it was good enough but today was the day. The mountain bike has been utterly neglected so far this year due to…well to much road. No excuses, I haven’t been on the mountain bike in two months and can count on one hand how many times Iv rode it on a trail this year. Its kinda sobering actually admitting that but I figure this is a good first step at changing my focus.
So I scrubbed the bike down, mud and all that was caked on, and cleaned and lubed the chain. It was much needed to say the least.
Then it was on to cutting and measuring over and over to get the cable housing length just right. Honestly it took less than an hour to redo the cable and I don’t know why iv been putting it off. Everything went smooth. I guess in the back of my mind Im still always scared that I might take something apart that I cant get back together. I mean Im fairly proficient at working on my bike now but there is always that little fear. The mountain bike now sits ready to roll…tomorrow.
This is honestly the first week its been dry all summer and getting a little break from home healthcare Im going to make a day of it on the mountain bike. I actually only have two weeks left until I move to Raleigh and thusly will be three hours from my favorite mountain bike trail rather than 20 minutes. Yeah its time I pack in some rides the next couple weeks. Im planning on an over three hour day so Ill take the camera and take some pics for a better report next week…
