We teed of about 8:30AM this morning in an effort to beat the heat but by 10 it was scorching. Things began well with a great tee shot off the par 4 first hole with only an eight iron to the green. I made solid contact on the approach shot but barely missed the green and hit a steep hillside rolling about 10 yards from the green. Still in good position though to make an easy pitch and putt for par. Somehow I managed to pitch it completely over the green then chiped it back on. Then I proceeded to three putt for a double bogey after being in great position.
I detailed that first hole because it pretty much sums up the entire day. I hit my driver surprisingly well (even to far a few times) and made good approaches to the green. However my game inside 50 yards and my putting were gone. Usually my short game is great and even what saves me because me drives are so bad most of the time. Im sure part of it was rust and Im thinking that maybe you can retain the mechanics of the full swing without playing but you lose the feel required with putts and short pitches. Just my opinion.
Anyway we made the turn with Justin ahead by 7 strokes 49 to 42. However I was relativity happy, my chances of breaking 100 were still intact and I hadnt lost but one or two balls. I knew I had no chance to beat Justin because hes been playin his whole life and played for the North Wilkes team.
The 11th is probalbly my faviorite hole on the course. Its a little par 3 thats only 90 yards down a hill but very pretty and great green. Its a hard shot though with the odd yardage. Heres a quick shot of justin after hitting a short shot.
We finished up the back nine with me shooting a 46 and Justin a 47. So I won the back nine but he still beat me by 6 strokes overall shooting an 89. I was very pleased though with a 95. Rock Creek is a very technical course that required a lot of thinking and not just smacking the ball down the course.
Moral of the story is that we had a good day on the course, played better than expected, and you wont find me complaining about a 95 ever.
